Shaping the future of Generative AI for data management

At Smartsheet, I’ve delved into the uncharted waters of Generative AI, exploring how cutting-edge technology can transform enterprise workflows. As the lead designer for AI table creation and filtering, I spearheaded projects that pushed the boundaries of data interaction in the B2B space. These initiatives demanded a blend of creativity, technical fluency, and stakeholder management, ultimately teaching me the value of decisive leadership amidst complexity.

AI-Generated Visuals: Pioneering Dashboard Enhancements

I led the design and development of a feature that enables AI-generated visuals on dashboards, serving 5,000 early adopters. This involved:

  • Aligning 5+ Cross-Functional Teams: From engineering to marketing, ensuring seamless collaboration.

  • Tackling Technical Challenges: Overcoming hurdles like real-time data rendering and dynamic integration with existing dashboards.

  • Balancing Stakeholder Priorities: Navigating competing visions while staying focused on delivering a clear, impactful user experience.

The result? A transformative feature that empowered users to extract insights and create compelling visuals directly from their data.

AI Table Creation: A Unified Vision for Data Interaction

One of my most exciting projects was redefining table creation and filtering in Smartsheet. The goal was ambitious: to make AI prompting and filtering a unified, intuitive experience—a true suite of generative tools.

Design Process Highlights

  • Exploration and Prototyping:

    • Designed an AI-driven system for generating and filtering tables directly from sheets.

    • Unified prompting, filtering, and table generation into a single, cohesive workflow.

  • Focus on Usability:

    • Created interactions that allowed users to apply filters and surface row-level insights without disrupting existing workflows.

    • Developed a hover-based tooltip system to improve legibility and clarity for filtered data.

  • Iterative Feedback Loops:

    • Incorporated recommendations for distinguishing casual filtering from more complex report creation workflows.

    • Balanced ephemeral actions (e.g., filtering) with more structured, high-impact outputs like saving and dashboard integration.

Though designs remain private and unreleased, the concepts handed off to engineering represent a paradigm shift in how users interact with large datasets.

Designing for Future Generations of Smartsheet

The innovations I spearheaded reflect a forward-looking approach to enterprise software:

  1. From Tools to Solutions

    • Envisioned AI tools not as isolated features but as integrated systems that adapt to user workflows, streamlining complex processes into intuitive experiences.

  2. Proactive Insights

    • Bridged the gap between raw data and actionable insights by designing features that empower users to surface meaningful patterns effortlessly.

  3. Adaptive Systems

    • Prototyped interactions where AI learns and adapts to user inputs, creating a more conversational, responsive workspace.

Looking Ahead

The future of AI in Smartsheet lies in expanding these principles:

  • Generative Workflows: AI features that don’t just enhance but reshape how teams collaborate, making every interaction feel dynamic and intelligent.

  • Seamless Integration: Moving beyond dashboards to create interconnected systems where every output can feed directly into broader workflows.

  • Human-AI Synergy: Ensuring AI doesn’t replace creativity but amplifies it, enabling teams to focus on strategic thinking while automating repetitive tasks.

These projects reflect a vision where Generative AI becomes the backbone of modern work, turning complexity into clarity and empowering users to do their best work.
